1937-40c. Emerson 12" Silver Swan Desk Fan

1937-40c. Emerson Electric Company of St. Louis, MO., U.S.A. 12" Silver Swan Vintage Desk Fan

The Emerson Electric Company introduced the Silver Swan at the height of the Depression in 1934. Its creation is an interesting story in itself. Joe Newman, an Emerson board member who was soon to take Emerson's helm, challenged a St.Louis interior designer named Jane Evans with designing a modern desk fan that would depart conventional desk fan design. The result was one of the most beautiful, yet functional fans ever manufactured. The Silver Swan embodies the graceful elegance that its name implies, while its engineering is premium quality Emerson Electric of the 1930s. Emerson described the fan best in period literature. They simply called it "aristocratic".

We seldom know the history behind our inventory, but when we do, we like to share it. This 12" Emerson Silver Swan has an outstanding history that warrants publication. We purchased it from the original owner's neice who relayed an interesting story about this fan and her uncle. It seems this particular fan is a veteran of sorts, cooling her Uncle as he practiced medicine during his brave service to the United States and the rest of the world, patching up allied soldiers in France during World War II. His name was Dr. M.L. Stephenson and this fan is a lasting tribute and reminder of his service to free the world of tyranny.

Dr. Stephenson's niece told us that he purchased this Silver Swan before he left for duty and was so fond of it he took it with him. She then showed us where he lightly engraved his name in the front and a number on the rear aluminum housing. We think his generation was indeed the Greatest Generation and are honored to offer his personal Silver Swan to our clientele . Dr. Stephenson knew the quality behind his Silver Swan and it made such an impression on him that he did not want to loose it.

Dr. Stephenson's Emerson Type 5460-C runs smoothly on all three speeds and oscillates in its present unrestored state. It has a nice original mahogany painted finish that will preserve well. It is available while it last in Unrestored AS/IS condition or it can be purchased with a Full Premium Restoration which will include preserving the original finish.
