1904-06c. Emerson 56" Type CF-20 Ornamental Antique Ceiling Fan, Copper Oxide Finish, Original Blades

1904-06c. the Emerson Electric MFG. Company, ST.Louis, MO., U.S.A., 56" Type CF-20 Ornamental Antique Ceiling Fan, Copper Oxide Finish, Original Blades

The Emerson Electric Company was a leader among the early alternating current ceiling fan manufacturers. The first practical brushless alternating current ceiling fan Emerson produced was introduced in 1897 as the type CF 28 model. The two bladed CF-28 was extremely ornamental, and helped the company gain market share in the growing AC ceiling fan market. Emerson manufactured the CF-28 through 1901 or so. Other models followed including 1902 model, the two bladed CF-14. Around 1903, a new larger sized motor was introduced the two blade CF-20.

The basic design of CF-20 would essentially be basis for the ornamental ceiling fan that Emerson would build upon through the teens, making improvements and eventually eliminating the two blade design for a four blade version only. Early on, the two bladed fan would also be joined by a first four bladed version the Type CF-24 around 1904-06.

The CF-20 was manufactured for a short period of time and the earliest versions features an open filigree oil cup surround that is similar to that of its predecessors the CF-14 and CF-28. Original two blade Emerson ceiling fans are seldom seen today. According to period literature, this model's standard finish was oxidized copper, a finish we can reproduce on this model for a period correct restoration. Other finishes were available and we have also seen these in a mix of baked Black Japan Enamel and Oxidized Copper.

The particular CF-20 Emerson shown in this gallery was fully restored for a client in Oregon. We acquired this particular one from a gentleman who had purchased it out of a home in ST. Louis, MO. where it had been for decades. The restoration included a complete rewind performed in house at VintageFans.com on our circa 1940s winding machine by our resident antique motor expert Mr. Sam Morgan. The period correct copper oxide finish was specified by the client for authenticity and it now completes a renovation of a historic Oregon home.
